Do I need a referral from my GP or the hospital?
No. A private occupational therapy home assessment can be arranged directly, without a GP referral or a hospital letter. It is worth mentioning if an NHS or council assessment is already underway, so that advice from two sources does not end up pulling in different directions.
We are already waiting for an NHS occupational therapy assessment. Is there any point in this?
That depends on what you need. A private assessment does not move you up an NHS waiting list, and it cannot issue council equipment or approve council-funded work. What it can do is give you a considered view sooner, and a written account of the difficulties you are having that you can put in front of the NHS or council service when your turn comes.
Should family be there, or is it better to be seen on my own?
Either can work, and it is your choice. Having someone there helps if they do a lot of the day-to-day supporting, or if you would rather not have to remember everything afterwards. The risk with a full room is that people start answering for you, and the visit quietly becomes about what everyone else has noticed rather than what you want to be able to do.
Could an assessment be used to decide I can no longer live at home?
An occupational therapist visiting privately at your request has no power to decide where you live. That decision is yours, and where an adult is unable to make it for themselves it goes through a formal legal process rather than through a home visit. The purpose of this kind of assessment is the opposite: to work out what would have to change for home to keep working.
