Will an occupational therapy report get us a higher medical priority banding?
It cannot. Banding criteria belong to the council or housing association and are applied by them under their own allocation scheme. What a report can do is make sure the people applying those criteria are working from an accurate, specific account of what the person cannot do in that property and why, rather than from a form filled in at speed. That is genuinely worth having, but it is evidence, not an outcome.
Does this replace the assessment the council would carry out?
No. Where a council or housing association requires its own occupational therapy assessment, it will still require it, and an independent report does not stand in for it. What an independent assessment gives you is a clear, written, evidenced view of your own situation that you can use while that process runs, or where the provider accepts external evidence. Ask which applies before you commission anything.
We have been offered a property. Can it be assessed before we accept?
In principle yes, and that is the right moment to look properly. In practice it depends on how long you have been given to respond and whether access to the property can be arranged inside that window, which is usually the limiting factor rather than the assessment itself. If you are on a list and offers are likely, it is worth checking availability before one arrives rather than afterwards.
What if the report concludes our home could be adapted, when we want to move?
That is a real possibility and worth being prepared for. The assessment sets out what it finds, and if the difficulties could be resolved by changes to the building it will say so and describe them. You are still entitled to make your own case to the housing provider, and the report may well help with the adaptation route instead. What cannot happen is a report written the other way round to suit the application.
